While the giraffes at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo (above) live in heterosexual, family-centered bliss, homosexual activity among male giraffes at the Taipei zoo reportedly has become so blatant that the zoo plans to import more females. The Chronicles' prediction: It'll never work! (And what if the females turn out to be lesbians?)
CoP CAN WE TALK KITCHEN?
BY JULIAN WILDE
I absolutely adore summer. Fresh fruit is available in nagnificent abundance and one of my favorites is strawberries (speaking of the inanimate, garden variety, of course). Those luscious, juicy numbers, bursting with fresh-picked flavor adapt to so many wonderful presentations.
Look for totally ripe, firm berries. Avoid mushy or light colored ones. It's best to rinse them just before using and use them soon after purhase, as they deteriorate quickly. Try them whole with bowls of sour cream and brown sugar for dipping. Leave the stems on to make dipping easier.
Another interesting way of serving them whole Comes from the late James Beard, who suggests filling a hypodermic needle with Grand Marnier and injecting it into the hollow centers of large berries. What a pleasant way to surprise your dinner or picnic quests!
Another way to use strawberries is in a beautiful, show-stopping pie. Its appearance belies its easy
preparation.

Strawberry Pie Mix together 1 cup sugar, tablespoons cornstarch, cup hot water. Bring mixture to a boil and add 4 tablespoons strawberry gelatin. Use Equal and the new sugarless gelatin to keep
calories down if you want). Stir until completely dissolved. Cool slightly at room temperature and mix gently into 1 quart of whole fulled strawerries. Pour mixture into a baked pie shell. Chill for 1 or 2 hours. Garnish with fresh mint and whipped cream. Hmmmmmmmm.
Strawberries aren't just for dessert anymore, either. They can be marvelous in a salád.
Strawberry/Spinach Salad Wash Z bunches of fresh spinach. Remove the stems and tear the leaves into bite-size pieces. Hull 1 pint of fresh strawberries and cut in half. Cut one small Vadalia onion into thin rings. Place these ingredients in a salad bowl. Toss gently with the following dressing:
1/4 cup sugar
2 tbsps sesame seeds 1 tbsp poppy seeds
1/4 tsp Worcestershire sauce 1/4 tsp paprika
1/2 cup vegetable oil 1/4 cup cider vinegar
Place these ingrédients in a covered jar and shake with vigor until blended. Serve immediately.
The strawberry season is short for the locally grown ones, but thanks to California and Florida, we can enjoy their versatility year round.
